About Mamecology

Mamecology is a stable exhibition of aesthetic responses to breast cancer. Exhibiting work from patients who have turned to creative practices when faced with a diagnosis, from professional writers and artists with an interest in breast cancer, and from loving witnesses, it gathers together a range of cultural representations of responses to this common disease. Aesthetic practices can give expression to the inner life of patients and their loved ones; art resonates with us in surprising ways often when other ways of communicating are not enough.

Patients and survivors report an array of feelings that we struggle to express in everyday language and culture. However, distinctive personal experiences that cannot be captured in our day-to-day talk, or be mirrored in medical words and images, can often find form in poetry, life-writing, music, memoir, crafts, painting, song, dance, movement and other modes of expression and exploration. Creative spaces allow us to think and see in paradoxes, contradictions and with complexity – and capture the shock, dislocation and turmoil of a diagnosis and living through and beyond it in whatever capacity.

Mamecology offers this virtual space as a rich resource to assist those who are ‘living well with, and through, cancer’ (Irish Cancer Society) and for those who love and support us. We continue to welcome contributions.
